Interesting Question...

Another interesting question:  what is the significance of the differences?

Biblical teaching seems to state that the marriage union of sex makes a man and a woman "one body."  That is 'merging' in a marriage...closely followed (in my young adult days) by brides sacrificing their gifts and talents to support those of their young husbands, merging themselves into the background of his work life and sometimes his social life...that's 'merging.'

Merging is necessary to sustain life, such as:  macaroni and cheese and other nutritious foods;  two hydrogen and one oxygen cell becoming water to play in and drink and wash in; the body's full acceptance of a stranger's kidney or liver to save life itself...and on and on.  Sustinance is important and these elements cannot not easily be unconnected.  Hydrogen and oxygen don't discuss leaving or cleaving or becoming something else.  Once combined, they are what they have become.  Perhaps onion in one recipe but not in another.  Someone else makes their decisions regarding seasoning and quantity and how much heat to apply....if macaroni says to cheese, "it's too hot in  here", there is nothing to do but wait out the burn.  They don't leave the oven of their own power.

However, adjoining is quite different.
